Time well spent

Imagine you had a bank account that deposited £86,400 in it each morning.

The terms and conditions are a little strange. You can’t keep a balance overnight, and at midnight the bank automatically withdraws whatever amount you have failed to use during the day.

What would you do?

Unless you’re a Kardashian, Bill Gates or Elon Musk, you’ll probably decide to withdraw every penny, every day!

Spend. Treat yourself. Enjoy. Do what you love.

Time to take action

We all have such a bank.

Its name is Time.

  • Every morning, the Bank of Time credits you with 86,400 seconds to use as you wish.

  • Every night it writes off whatever time you have failed to use.

  • It carries over no balance from one day to the next.

  • There’s no overdraft facility. No loans. You can’t borrow against yourself or use more time than you have been given.

  • Each night, any unused time disappears. If you fail to use the day’s balance, it’s gone.

  • You can’t appeal for lost time or seek compensation from a Time Ombudsman.

  • The time you have is yours to spend wisely or frivolously. You can be sensible or daring, cautious or free.

Your time to choose

Time is precious.

We may grumble that we don’t have enough time to do everything we want to do. We mean that we haven’t moved the things we value to the top of our to-do list… maybe your list includes travel, exciting trips with friends and family, trying new experiences or being more creative.

One day, often without warning, our time bank account will close.

Your lasting legacy

However you’ve chosen to use your time, you will have love, experience and other treasures to pass on. Your time will be stored in the memories of your family, friends and colleagues.

The property, cash and possessions you leave behind will pass on too.

If you didn’t spend a tiny portion of your time - as little as 2,700 seconds - making your Will, you would have lost:

  • the chance to choose who receives your cash and assets

  • the opportunity to support your favourite good causes

  • the chance to choose your children’s guardians

  • options to protect future generations of your family

There’s a chance you’ll also have lost valuable tax planning opportunities.

The gov.uk website has a useful interactive tool showing who will inherit if there is no Will: https://www.gov.uk/inherits-someone-dies-without-will.
